Paced for a nervous system
Trauma-informed, client-centered. You decide what we touch and when.
Austin changed fast, and its Latino families changed with it — many pushed east and out to Del Valle, Manor, Pflugerville, and Round Rock as the city got expensive, even as a wave of bicultural young professionals moved in for the jobs. If you're one of them, you know a particular kind of tired: the code-switching that never stops, the meetings where you're the only Latina in the room, the family back home who thinks you've "made it" and has no idea what it costs you to keep looking like you have.
That is high-functioning burnout, and Austin is full of it. It doesn't look like collapse. It looks like hitting every deadline, answering every text, showing up to every family obligation — and feeling almost nothing while you do. Underneath is usually an old belief that your worth is your usefulness, and that if you slow down, it all comes apart. That belief was learned, and what is learned can be worked on.
We look at where that pressure comes from, what keeps it running, and how to build a version of your life that doesn't require you to be depleted to feel deserving. We work on self-esteem, anxiety, the guilt that comes with being the first one out, and grief you never made time for. I draw on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and a holistic, client-centered approach — at your pace, and you decide what we touch and when.
Online is the right fit for Austin specifically: the traffic is real, the workday is long, and privacy matters when your professional world and your community overlap. You log on between meetings or after the commute, without adding a cross-town drive to an already full week.
I'm Maria Teresa Valencia, MA, LPC — a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas (license #64813), licensed in Texas since 2009. I'm bilingual; we can work entirely in Spanish. I grew up on the border with a father who told me to study and finish college so I wouldn't have to work as hard as he did — so I know both the pride and the weight of being the one who was supposed to make it out.

I'm successful on paper — is it silly to come to therapy when nothing is "wrong"?
Not at all. Most of my Austin clients look fine from the outside and are running on empty underneath. Being capable is not the same as being okay, and you don't have to be in crisis to deserve the hour.
Can we do this in Spanish, or Spanish and English mixed?
Both. Many bicultural clients move between languages, and we can too — whatever lets you say the real thing.
How long does this usually take?
It depends on what you're carrying and how long you've carried it. We'll talk about the arc before we start, so it never feels open-ended.
