McAllen is the commercial heart of the Rio Grande Valley — a city where Spanish is simply the language of daily life, where family is the center of gravity, and where the border with Reynosa shapes the rhythm of everything. It's also part of a region that has long been under-served for mental-health care, and even more so for private-pay therapy in Spanish. There are far more people who could use someone to talk to than there are Spanish-speaking therapists with an opening.

There's a second barrier here that has nothing to do with availability: el qué dirán. In a close community, the fear isn't only about talking — it's about someone finding out. People worry that a car parked outside a counselor's office says something about the family. That worry is real, and it keeps a lot of people who are hurting from ever making the call.

This is exactly where online therapy earns its place. You do it from your own home, with no waiting room and no chance of running into anyone you know. It is private in the way this community actually needs privacy. And you do it in Spanish, with someone for whom Spanish is a first language — so nothing you say has to be simplified or translated to be understood.

We work on low self-esteem, anxiety, grief that never got its turn, a past that still surfaces, and the exhaustion of being the woman who holds the whole family together. I draw on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and a holistic, client-centered approach — at your pace, and you decide what we touch and when. For families in an immigration case, I also conduct bilingual immigration hardship evaluations — a clinical evaluation, not legal advice, and never a promise of any outcome.

I'm Maria Teresa Valencia, MA, LPC — a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas (license #64813), licensed in Texas since 2009. I grew up on the border, so this world — the family, the language, the qué dirán — is my own.

Questions people ask

Is there anyone here who does therapy in Spanish, or do I have to settle for English?

You don't have to settle. I work entirely in Spanish when that's your language — and because we meet online, you're not limited to whoever happens to have an opening in McAllen.

I don't want anyone to know I'm going to therapy. How private is this?

Very. It's online, from your own home — no office, no waiting room, no car parked where a neighbor might notice. What we talk about stays between us, within the limits of the law.

Can we do this in Spanish?

Completely. It's my first language, not a translation.
