Mind and body carry each other

# Whole-Person Health .

The women who come into my office rarely arrive as a “mind” separated from a body. They arrive as a whole person — a stomach that has been tight for months, a jaw that has forgotten how to unclench, sleep that will not repair, an appetite that comes and goes without warning. The body carries a lot of what the mind has not been able to say out loud yet.

I don’t treat the body — I’m a counselor, not a physician — but I pay attention to it in the room, because ignoring it would be like listening to only half of what a person is telling me. This page is a short note about a few ordinary things that tend to help most people feel steadier, alongside the emotional work we do together.

## Sleep

Sleep is the first thing anxiety and grief tend to take. It is also the first thing that, when it comes back, makes almost everything else easier to carry. A steady bedtime, a room that is dark and cool, less bright light in the last hour of the day, and a wind-down that isn’t a screen — none of these are a cure, but together they give the nervous system a chance to settle. If sleep has been broken for a long time, that is a very good thing to talk about with your physician as well as with me.

## Movement

Movement does not need to be exercise in the gym sense. A daily walk — outside if you can, even ten minutes — is one of the best-documented low-cost supports for mood there is. Slow, rhythmic movement can be especially calming for a body that has been running on stress hormones. What matters is that it is regular and that it is something you do not dread.

## Nutrition and hydration

When women are stretched thin, eating is often the first thing that gets skipped, made mechanical, or turned into something to feel guilty about. Eating enough, at somewhat regular times, and drinking water through the day, is not glamorous, but it is stabilizing. If eating has become complicated for you — very restrictive, very chaotic, or laced with shame — please tell me and your physician; that is worth naming rather than white-knuckling through.

## Time outside

South Texas gives us light most of the year. Even a few minutes of morning light on your face, before you look at a screen, helps the body know what time it is. If you can, do it with the day’s first cup of coffee or tea rather than after.

## Rest that is not sleep

Rest is not only sleep. It is also quiet, boredom, doing one thing at a time, being with someone without an agenda. Many of the women I see are chronically over-stimulated more than they are chronically tired. Adding rest — real rest — is often more useful than adding one more supplement or app.

## When to bring it up with your physician

Ongoing physical symptoms — chest tightness, headaches, stomach pain, persistent fatigue, weight changes, changes in your cycle — deserve a medical look, not only a psychological one. Anxiety can produce very real body symptoms, and so can plenty of medical conditions, and only a physician can help you sort out which is which. If medication becomes part of what would help emotionally, I can coordinate with a prescribing provider; I do not prescribe.

## Not medical advice

Everything on this page is general wellbeing information, not medical advice, and not a diagnosis. Please speak with your physician about what is right for your body, your history, and any medications you take. If you are in an emergency, call **911**. If you are in emotional crisis, call or text **988**.
