Grief counseling

# Grief counseling — for the loss that didn’t get its turn .

Postponed grief does not expire. When it finally has a place to land, it becomes something you can carry — rather than something that carries you.

There is a kind of grief that never got a proper beginning. Something ended — a parent died, a marriage collapsed, a country was left, a child grew up and moved away — and there was no room for the person carrying it to fall apart. Someone had to keep the family running. So you did. And the grief waited.

It waited through the funeral you organized. Through the aunts who needed to be picked up from the airport. Through the will and the paperwork and the closing of accounts. Through the return to work three days later because that was what was expected. It has been waiting a long time, and it is still there.

## Grief that was postponed

Many of the women I work with come to grief therapy years, sometimes decades, after the loss. They apologize for being late. They should not. Grief that had no witness at the time does not stop being grief. It becomes a shape underneath the daily life — a heaviness that shows up in December, a song you cannot listen to, a phone call you almost make before you remember there is no one to answer.

In this work, we do not rush you toward closure. Closure is a word that gets used by people who are not the ones grieving. What we do instead is give the loss a place to exist, in the language it happened in, at the pace you can actually take. Slowly, the grief becomes something you can carry, rather than something that carries you.

## Complicated and quiet losses

Not every loss looks like a funeral. Some of the heaviest grief in my practice belongs to women grieving:

- A parent who is still alive but no longer themselves.
- A marriage that did not die suddenly, but eroded.
- A child who moved far away, or a child they never got to have.
- A friendship that ended without a fight, only a silence.
- A version of their own life that was assumed and never arrived.

These are real losses. They deserve real grief.

## Grieving a country, a language, a version of yourself

On the border, another kind of grief moves through the room often, and it is worth naming on its own. Migration grief is the grief of leaving a country, or of watching a country change into something you no longer recognize. It is the grief of raising children in a language your mother cannot easily follow. It is the grief of returning to a place that has changed since you left it, and finding out you have too.

Migration grief is layered. You are grieving the streets, the food, the way people said your name. You are grieving a version of yourself that only existed there. And you may also be carrying gratitude and pride, which makes the grief harder to admit, because the story you were supposed to tell was a story of success. Both are allowed in this room.

## How sessions work

Sessions are 60 minutes, in English or Spanish, by secure video anywhere in Texas or [in person in Laredo](/therapist-laredo-tx). Early sessions are for me to understand the loss and the person who is carrying it. From there, we work with the pieces of the story that need a witness, and with the parts of your daily life that the grief is still shaping.

If you are in crisis right now

Grief can bring dark and frightening thoughts, especially early on. Therapy is not an emergency service. If you are having thoughts of ending your life, or worried about your safety or someone else’s, please call or text [988](tel:988) for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call [911](tel:911). You are not weak for calling. You are doing exactly the right thing.

> Grief is not something you complete. It is something you learn to carry differently.

Not sure if this is the right fit? That’s what the free call is for.

## Questions people ask

### It's been years. Is it too late to grieve?

No. Grief that was postponed does not expire. Many of the women I work with are grieving something that happened a long time ago, and the work is not less real for arriving late.

### Do I have to cry in sessions?

No. There is no right way to grieve, and there is no performance required here. Some sessions are quiet. Some are practical. Some are only tears. All of it counts.

### Can we do this in Spanish?

Yes. For many bilingual women, the person who was lost lived mostly in Spanish. It matters that the grief can be spoken in the language the love happened in.
